The Trinity

Possibly one of the most hotly contested topics within and without Christianity is The Trinity.

I have never really understood why, but think that more than anything it is the word “Trinity” itself, that can be translated “a group of three closely related persons or things” (although not its primary meaning) and therefore gives certain people, groups and “Christian” denominations the leave to deny and even attack the doctrine of The Trinity as the heretical position of worshipping three separate gods.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

I suggest when anyone asks you whether you believe in The Trinity, that your best response would be “I believe in one Triune God”. That will silence most people and allow you to get on with a relatively uncomplicated life.

I think “Triune” is a much better word. The Trinity or the Triune God is explained the easiest as follows:

God is 100% God 100% of the time. Jesus is 100% God 100% of the time. The Holy Spirit is 100% God 100% of the time. And all three are 100% One God 100% of the time.

God does not become 33% of God when Jesus alone is mentioned, nor does only Jesus exist when Jesus alone is mentioned.

God is God, Jesus is God and the Holy Spirit is God AT ALL TIMES and all three are the one and the same God ALL THE TIME. They are one God ALL THE TIME. Thus Triune.

Some will say that The Trinity is not a Biblically provable idea. This is plainly wrong.

Amongst a myriad of examples is the baptism of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (Matt 3:16-17)

Whilst being 100% God at Jesus’ baptism, God spoke from Heaven (being 100% God) whilst the Holy Spirit (also being 100% God) rested upon Jesus (being 100% God) as a dove.

We know from this that God is three separate persons, God, Jesus and God’s Holy Spirit, but also that all three are at the same time 100% God and NOT three separate gods.

We have established elsewhere on this site that Jesus is God and we read from Deuteronomy that “The LORD our God is one Lord” (Deu 6:4) and yet we can see plainly God as separate from Jesus at His baptism along with the Holy Spirit as separate from God and Jesus.

Therefore we can see that they do not become one form without equally being each other at the same time. God does not appear as one of the three and temporarily cease to be the other two and AT ALL TIMES ALL THREE ARE ONE.

In the spirit of simplicity, we will consider one other example of The Trinity or Triune God in the Scriptures, again relating to baptism.

In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus tells the eleven apostles there present: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” (Matt 28:19).

Near the beginning of book of Acts, detailing the first actions of the apostles, following Jesus’ instructions (above), Peter, who had heard Jesus’ words with his own ears, says “be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 2:38).

Scripture cannot contradict itself, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…” (2 Tim 3:16) and “God…. cannot lie” (Tit 1:2), therefore both of these statements must agree with each other; Our Lord Jesus Christ is God – The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

God is God, Jesus is God and God’s Holy Spirit is God. ALWAYS.

“For there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” (1 John 5:7)
