Heaven or Hell?
Do you think you will go to Heaven or to Hell when you die?
To that question most people will immediately say Heaven. You will have some who will laugh and say “I think I am definitely going to Hell…” and some will even add”…and I’m looking forward to it”. Sometimes this will be followed by a nervously skipped heartbeat as they check for the hope in the bottom of the glass. I know about the heartbeat and the glass because I have looked there for it myself. Trust me when I say I have checked more glasses than you have…it isn’t there!
The ones who joke about going to Hell, simply have no idea about what Hell is. A common misunderstanding on the high street, is that the devil is in charge of Hell and that all the sinful things we have enjoyed doing here are allowed in Hell and so it will be quite a “cool” place to spend eternity. This is simply not true. Let’s look at some simple, solid facts…
If there is a Hell, there is a Heaven and, for all the Satanists out there, if there is a Satan, then there has to be a God.; it is just totally illogical for there not to be.
Therefore if there is a God, then the Bible is true.
If the Bible is true, read the ending…GOD WINS !
Therefore, who do you think is in charge of Hell?
It is not the devil. In Revelation 20:10 we see that “…the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone…..and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever”
God is in charge of Hell !
The Bible describes Hell throughout Scripture as a place where a person is “tormented in this flame” Luke 16:24; That they have been cast “into a furnace of fire” where “there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth” Matt 13:42,50; That it is “everlasting fire” Matt 25:41; a “lake of fire and brimstone” and that the devil and all those whose names are not written in the Book of Life (Rev 20:15) “shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever” Rev 20:10 and “the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever: and they have no rest day or night” Rev: 14:11
Does that sound like a “cool” place to spend eternity? I think NOT !
Hell is a place of total and never ending punishment, not some sinful amusement park where people are laughing and joking and doing all that they please for eternity. Get real about Hell !!!
So, let’s go back to our original question “Do you think you will go to Heaven or to Hell when you die?”
The most common response is “Heaven” followed by a short list of their own justifications for having led a “reasonably good life”. This is usually a totting up of righteousness versus minor offences and always results in the good column being longer than the bad column, thus, more good minus less bad, equals Heaven. Wrong !
Now, as we have established, if God exists, then the Bible is His Word to us, therefore it is in the Bible that we are going to find the Truth about God’s view of us.
This is God’s view of our own righteousness:
We are “Dead in trespasses and sins…children of disobedience…children of wrath” Eph 2:1-3. “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; …like the wind our sins sweep us away.”“As it is written, there is no one righteous, no, not one;…there is none that doeth good, no not one.” Rom3:10-12. Even our offerings are detestable “The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?”Pro 21:27
If, from the 613 separate laws that God gave to His people to obey, and about which we are told “Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” Jam 2:10, we just pick a few of the famous Ten Commandments, Ex 20:3-17, let us look at how our own righteousness will stand up:
Have you ever lied? God says“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour”
Have you ever stolen anything? God says “Thou shalt not steal”
Have you ever looked at another in lust? God says “Thou shalt not commit adultery” and Jesus added “whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Matt 5:28
Have you ever been angry with someone? God says “Thou shalt not murder” and Jesus added “whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgement” Matt 5:22
So if, as I would have to admit to all of those, you have honestly admitted to some or all, then by your own admission you will stand before God and have to describe yourself as a lying, adulterous, murdering thief ! Do you think God will let you into Heaven?
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, … nor adulterers, Nor thieves,…shall inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Cor 6:9-11 and “The…unbelieving…and murderers, …and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone…” Rev21:8
I think that’s a “No” then !
There is only one alternative and that is Hell. Therefore, let us ask our main theme question again. “Do you think you will go to Heaven or to Hell when you die?” I will tell you the answer.
If you do not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God then you will go to Hell. This is not me judging you, it is God’s Word that has already judged you: he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:18
And yet….
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Rom 5:8
In contrast to the warning in John 3:18 (above) Jesus says “He who believes in Him (Jesus) is not judged”. Let’s therefore look at the whole of the message that Jesus was giving in John 3:15-18:
“…whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
God does not want anyone to go to Hell. God “is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” 2 Pet 3:9, but we have a problem “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Rom 3:23 and “the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Rom 6:23
So what can we do?
There is only one thing we can do. It is the only offer on the table. Hell is our current hand. Heaven is the free offer. Which will you choose?
Jesus Christ came to earth to live the only possible perfect life and then, as the only One who had ever lived and yet not sinned and therefore, the only One who COULD have actually entered Heaven, He took ALL of our sins, every single one, from every single person who has ever lived and placed them upon His life. As we have seen, “the wages of sin is death”, therefore He has died FOR our sins INSTEAD OF US.
A gift is, by definition, FREE. “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Salvation into Heaven forever is a free gift, there for the taking, if we will just receive it by faith. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and this not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Eph 2:8-9
So how do you accept this free gift of salvation?
Well, we have looked at what offerings of our own righteousness God does not like, but there is one He does: “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” Isa 66:2 and King David said “for thou desirest not sacrifice; else I would give it…The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
- Realise you are a sinner !!! “A contrite heart” is a heart that has realised you are in the wrong and are sorry that you fall so far short of the mark of God’s standards.
- Realise that no matter what you do, that you cannot enter Heaven based upon your own righteousness.
- Realise therefore, that you need a Saviour who has proven Himself righteous.
- Realise who that Saviour is: Jesus Christ the only Son of God.
- Understand that He came to this earth in order that He may take all of your sins to His death on the cross.
- Understand that God accepted this one perfect sacrifice FOR YOU once and forever, in payment for all of your sins, past, present and future and proved this to you by raising Jesus back to life.
- Tell God that you are a sinner, that you understand these things and that you want to be forgiven and go to Heaven based upon Jesus’ sacrifice for your sins, based upon Jesus’ works for you and not upon your own and based upon Jesus’ righteousness and not yours.
- Ask God to save you and He will !!!
A prayer can be something as simple as this:
God, I realise I am a sinner and that because of that I am destined for Hell. I believe that you sent Jesus, your son, to die for all of my sins, past, present and future. I believe that Jesus did this for me and that you accepted this in payment for all of my sins. I believe you showed that to me by raising Jesus back to life. I ask you to forgive me for all of my sins and to save me into Heaven. Please help me to know you better from this day on. I ask this prayer in the name of your son Jesus Christ. Amen.
“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of His glory.” Eph 1:13-14
As you can see from the above Scripture, this happens immediately and you are sealed as an co-inheritor of the Kingdom of Heaven forever; NOT because of anything you have done, are doing or could do, but based 100% upon the finished work of Jesus’ death and resurrection that He completed for you, so that by believing in Him, you will not perish in Hell but will have everlasting life in Heaven.
If you have prayed this prayer and meant it with all your current understanding and with a sincere and contrite heart, then you can ask yourself our question one final time: “Do you think you will go to Heaven or to Hell when you die?”This time the answer is a most definite and most permanent “Heaven” !!!
God Bless You.
All scripture is quoted from the King James version (KJV) apart from Eph 1:13-14 which is taken from the New International version (NIV)
This is the same question asked to the public and is taken from aaronshaf2006’s channel on YouTube. It is a bit long to be honest, but it does give you time to think about your own justification for being good enough for Heaven. Worth watching if you are still not convinced from what you have read above.
